Born in Cardiff, South Wales, Steve Andrews became known as the Bard of Ely many years later when in the late '90s Big Issue magazine, in which he had a regular column, dubbed him with the title. He is a singer-songwriter, poet, author, freelancer, photographer and naturalist, and has written for Permaculture, Big Issue, Feed Your Brain, Prediction and Living Tenerife magazines, as well as the Tenerife News and Tenerife Sun newspapers.
As a performer the Bard of Ely has played at Glastonbury and the Green Man festivals and he was an MC for the Avalon Stage at Glastonbury Festival in 2002 and 2003.
His song You're a Liar, Nicky Wire was rave reviewed in the NME and fronted the Taffia EP on Crai Records in 2002. More recently in 2009 an album entitled Welsh Wizard was released on DMMG Records.
Under his real name Steve Andrews he is the author of Herbs of the Northern Shaman published by O-Books.
In the late `90s, Steve worked as a TV presenter for two series of In Full View on BBC Choice Digital. He has appeared in many other TV programmes and also been in films, two of which (Rebecca's Daughters and Restoration) went on general release.
Steve Andrews is written about in books by several authors. He is in Fierce Dancing and Last of the Hippies by CJ Stone, The Trials of Arthur by Christopher James Stone and Arthur Pendragon, Real Cardiff by Peter Finch, The World's Most Mysterious People by Lionel and Patrica Fanthorpe and Leonard Cohen: A Remarkable Life by Anthony Reynolds.
On line Steve Andrews/Bard of Ely spends a lot of his time at Facebook and hubpages and with a friend is in charge of running a fansite at Facebook for the adventurer and environmentalist David de Rothschild.
Steve is also a druid and is a Quest Knight of the Loyal Arthurian Warband Druid Order.
