Best Review - Top 7 New African Heads of States 2018

T

he African continent has been on the radar for being a breeding ground for long term serving dictators as leaders who clinch to power and modify constitutions to remain for as long as they can. However, with democracy expanding and persistent calls by their population for change in leadership to end corruption scandals, poor Governance, poverty, economic failure, poor social developments, such leaders have come under the radar of the international Community like U.S.A, Britain and France to have such leaders hand over power to competent and youthful leaders. Added to these are internal pressures that that saw a new trend of power exchange through forceful resignation, peaceful military coups or electoral transition. However, as of April 5, 2018 here are the top 7 new African Heads of States:
1. Angola - Joao Lourenco
2. Zimbabwe - Emmerson Mnangagwa.
3. Liberia - George Weak.
4. South Africa - Cyril Ramaphosa.
5. Botswana - Mokgweetsi Massa
6. Egypt - Abdel Fattah El.Sisi.
7. Sierra Leone - Juluis Massa.

President Joao Lourenco was sworn in on 27 Sept, 2017 after being hand picked by incumbent Jose Eduardo Dos Santos to end his 38 year rule as President of Angola. Expectations are high as he makes swift changes.

Top 2

President Emmerson Mnangagwa of Zimbabwe.

The most talked about global political transition was the case of Robert Mogabe who is today replaced by his Vice President Mnangagwa on November 20th 2017. A transition facilitated by the military, the parliament and the ruling Zanu Party that brought in sacked Mnangagwa from South Africa to become Zimbabwe's 2nd President after 37 years.

Top 3

President George Weah of Liberia.

Unique this transition for it tends out to be historic. For a very first democratic peaceful transition in Liberia, George Weah former Football star was able to win the presidential race replacing incumbent Elen Johnson Sirleaf. A most talked about president for the African continent. Hopes are high as we see what the youth in him can deliver.

Top 4

President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa.

Similar to the Zimbabwe style of exit, incumbent South African President Jacob Zuma who under his 2nd term has been under severe pressure for corruption scandal was forced to resign, hence handing power to South African 10th Richest man Ramaphosa.

Top 5

President Mokgweetsi Masisi of Botswana

In a silent fashion and highly unexpected, Botswana over the the weekend of March 31st saw incumbent President Ian khama stepping down as his term comes to an end. On April 1st, President Mokgweetsi was sworn in as need head of state.

Top 6

President Abdul Fattah El-Sisi of Egypt

Though yet to be confirmed, President Abdul Fattah El-Sisi winning the first round of elections with over 90% and only opposition dropping out, there are already declarations of him serving a second term after coming to office through a coup in 2014. Though second rounds are scheduled for April 16 to 18, the outcome has already been made known.

Top 7

President Juluis Madda of Sierra Leone.

The world's most newest President as I document this article is Julius Maada. He comes in to replace incumbent Ernest Bai Koroma who is stepping down after a 2 term mandate of five years. Maada was sworn in on same 4th April 2014 according to the constitution to avoid power vacuum and in his inaugural speech calls on his opponent Samura Karama not to challenge the results.

However, African transition problems have not been solved as only 3 out of these 7 heads of States being George Weah, Juluis Massa and Controversial Abdel Fattah El-Sisi were legitimately voted into office. The rest from Lourenco, Mnangagwa, Ramaphosa, Mokgweetsi were appointed after resignation of their incumbents which is mostly viewed by many as a continuation.
